Institution categories

The following section briefly presents the key characteristics and bibliometric indicators for eleven Institution Categories, as well as the institutions that achieved the highest values. The data refers to the last 5-year period of this study 2014-2018.

Universities:

Number and share of (%) publications: The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki produce the greatest number of publications in the category "Universities" with 15,234 (29.8%) and 11,250 (22.0%), respectively.

Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than the Greek performance (75.6%) is accomplished by Hellenic Mediterranean University, Harokopio University of Athens, the University of Crete, the Technical University of Crete, University of Ioannina, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Technical University of Athens, University of Patras and the Agricultural University of Athens.

Number and share (%) of citations:  The higher number of citations was attributed to Universities with the higher number of publications for 2012-2016 - the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The former had 162,932 citations and a share of 38.0% within the category, while the latter had 100,108 citations and a share of 23.4%.

Relative citation score: Publications by all universities (except the University of West Attica and the Ionian Univeristy) exceed the world average in terms of citations. 

 

Research Centers supervised by GSRT:

Number and share of (%) publications: The National Center of Scientific Research (NCSR) DEMOKRITOS and the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Research Centers" during the 2014-2018 with 2,764 (29.8%) and 2,590 (27.9%) publications, respectively.

Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than 75.6% (the Greek performance, in sum) is accomplished by most Research Centers. Specifically, the National Observatory of Athens (83.9%), FORTH (81.6%), BSRC FLEMING (81.5%), CERTH (81.4%), NCSR DEMOKRITOS (81.0%),  NHRF (80.0%), the Hellenic Pasteur Institute  (79.3%) and HCMR (79.0%).

Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2014-2018 period are received by the publications of NCSR DEMOKRITOS and FORTH. The former had 31,607 citations and a share of 33.7% within the category, while the latter had 26,982 citations and a share of 28.8%.

Relative citation score: Publications by 8 Research Centers exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2014-2018, the National Observatory of Athens achieved a citation score of 1.85, followed by BSRC FLEMING (1.70), NCSR DEMOKRITOS (1.60), HCMR (1.54), FORTH (1.40), ATHENA (1.29), CERTH (1.18) and the Hellenic Pasteur Institute (1.01).

 

Other Public Research Institutions:

Number and share of (%) publications: The Academy of Athens and the National Agricultural Research Foundation produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Other Public Research Institutions" during the 2014-2018 with 1,298 (44.8%) and 733 (80.7%) publications, respectively. 

Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than 75.6% (the Greek performance, in total) is accomplished by CRES (88.5%), the Institute of Engineering Seismology & Earthquake Engineering (85.7%), HSGME (83.7%), Entities of the Ministry of Health (83.6%), the Academy of Athens (80.7%), and MAICh. (75.9%).

Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2014-2018 period are received by the publications of the Academy of Athens (14,007) and a share of 60.3% within the category, while the Hellenic Agricultural Organization Demeter has 3,374 and a share of 14.5%.

Relative citation score: Publications by 6 Other Public Research Institutions exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2014-2018, Computer Technology Institute and Press "Diophantus"  achieved the highest citation score (2.36). Publications by HSGME (1.95), Entities of the Ministry of Culture (1.91), Academy of Athens (1.32), Entities of the Ministry of Health (1.32%) and Hellenic Agricultural Organization Demeter (1.11) achieved higher citation scores than the world average.

 

Public Health Institutions:

Number and share of (%) publications: The LAIKO General Hospital of Athens and IPPOKRATEIO General Hospital of Athens (IPPOKRATEIO ATHENS) produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Public Health Institutions" during the 2014-2018 with 1,068 (15.1%) and 709 (10.0%) publications, respectively.

Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than the total Greek score of 75.6% is accomplished by the SOTIRIA (81.6%), the KORGIALENEIO (79.8%), the AGIA SOPHIA (76.3%) and the THEAGENIO Cancer Hospital of Thessaloniki (77.2%),

Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2014-2018 period are received by the publications of ALEXANDRA and LAIKO. The former had 14,625 citations and a share of 22.2% within the category, while the latter had 11,986 citations and a share of 18.2%.

Relative citation score: Publications by 8 Public Health Institutions exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2014-2018, the ALEXANDRA achieved a citation score of 3.09, followed by KORGIALENEIO (2.04), SOTIRIA General Hospital of Athens (1.87),  the G.GENNIMATAS (1.53),  the LAIKO General Hospital of Athens (1.48), the G. PAPAGEORGIOU General Hospital (1.33), IPPOKRATEIO THESSALONIKI (1.31), and EVAGGELISMOS (1.03).

 

Private Health Institutions:

Number and share of (%) publications: Hygeia Hospital and the Athens Medical Group produced the greatest number of publications (and share) in the category "Private Health Institutions" during the 2014-2018 with 338 (14.2%) and 170 (7.2%) publications, respectively.

Percentage (%) of cited publications: A percentage higher than 75.6% (the Greek score, in sum) is accomplished by Athens Medical Group and IASO

Alfa Institute of Biomedical Sciences (AIBS) (85.0%),  (81.2%), Metropolitan Hospital (77.0%), and St. Luke's Hospital (74.8%).

Number and share (%) of citations: Most citations for the 2014-2018 period are received by the publications of Hygeia Hospital and AIBS 

Relative citation score: Publications by 6 Private Health Institutions exceed the world average in terms of citations. In 2014-2018, AIBS achieve a citation score of 2.31, followed by Metropolitan Hospital, EUROCLINIC Group, Hygeia Hospital, HENRY DUNANT and IASO Hospital.
